It is finally summertime and the temperatures continue to rise. For many, that means it is time to crank up the air conditioner. However, excessive use of your air conditioner can add to your electric bill. By making some simple changes, you can still stay cool while also saving on energy costs. Here are simple ways to keep your home cool this summer:

summer energy-saving tips

  • Use fans to keep air circulating on hot days.
  • Use shades to keep the cool air inside your home.
  • Reduce your use of electronics such as televisions and video games that create a lot of heat and raise the temperature in your house.
  • Try cooking meals on an outside grill. If you have to cook meals inside, try to use the microwave instead of the stove.
  • Walk around the outside of your house, searching for cracks or holes that will allow air to get into the house. Seal these properly.
  • Check around your windows to see if you need to re-silicone the seals. Reseal any cracks or gaps in the house.
  • If you’re using your air conditioner, check the furnace filter at least once a month to make sure it is clean.
  • Consider getting an air conditioner tune up to make sure your system is running at maximum efficiency.
