Perishable food storage - To help prevent food loss during extended outages, keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Most refrigerators will preserve food sufficiently for 12 to 24 hours and freezers will do the job for a longer period of time. Fuller refrigerators and freezers will also keep food cold longer. Placing blocks of ice in the refrigerator or freezer and wrapping blankets around your appliances can help prevent food loss during extended outages.
Safety around power lines - Safety is our first concern, both for the public and for our employees. Whenever you see a downed power line, call one of our outage numbers with the location and STAY AWAY from it. Always assume a line is energized and stay clear of it because a line on the ground may still have electric current running through it. If cutting trees after a storm, avoid trees that are touching or are near power lines. Contact W-H for assistance when removing any trees located near power lines.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) - For sensitive loads such as computers, you may want to consider purchasing a battery-backed power supply referred to as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). A UPS can prevent your computer from shutting off if the power is momentarily interrupted. |
