Commercial Generators

When it comes to power, reliability matters, especially for businesses with critical operations. Wright-Hennepin's Commercial Generator Program offers power quality solutions that help commercial members reduce electric costs and gain peace of mind with reliable, on-site backup power.

Whether you operate essential equipment, serve vulnerable populations, or simply want to take control of your electric use during peak times, this program provides flexibility, cost savings, and resilience.

Program Overview

The Commercial Generator Program is designed for commercial members who can reduce their connected electric load to zero during periods of high demand, known as load control events. This can be accomplished by operating an on-site backup generator or by manually shutting down operations.

Participating members help reduce strain on the grid during peak demand and, in return, benefit from a reduced energy rate and increased energy reliability.

How It Works

Wright-Hennepin monitors demand and issues a load control event when needed.

If you have a backup generator, WH will automatically start the generator to take your business off the grid temporarily.

If you do not use a generator, your business may qualify by shutting down operations entirely during the event.

Once the event concludes, your regular service resumes.

Benefits

  • Lower electric costs through WH’s interruptible service rate
  • Enhanced reliability through on-site backup generation
  • Contribution to grid stability and community energy management
  • Flexible participation for generator and non-generator businesses

Eligibility & Requirements

Commercial members with the ability to reduce demand to zero during load control events must either:

  • Use a backup generator (typically diesel), OR manually curtail operations during events
  • WH-approved generator installation is required for automatic control
  • Members must allow WH to operate the generator remotely during peak periods
