How snowbirds can keep their electric bills low this winter

Snowbirds who move south for the winter likely already have their bags packed. If you are part of one of Wright-Hennepin’s (WH) Energy-Saving Programs (ESPs), there are a few extra steps to take to ensure you get a lower rate for heating your home.

The metro area has already gotten the first measurable snow of the year, and it won’t be long until there’s more of it. Snowbirds who move south for the winter likely already have their bags packed. If you are part of one of Wright-Hennepin’s (WH) Energy-Saving Programs (ESPs), there are a few extra steps to take to ensure you get a lower rate for heating your home. Follow this checklist to ensure everything is in order before heading out for the winter:

  1. Make sure the circuit breaker that is tied to the ESP meter remains in operation. ESP meters often share a circuit with a well or water heater, and turning that circuit off will shut power off to the Energy-Saving Meter. If the meter isn’t on, the Energy-Saving rate won’t be applied to your home, which can cause higher than expected bills.

  1. Check to make sure your meter is on. To do this, shut off what you normally do, then go outside and look at your Energy-Savings meter. If the meter is digital, you will see a reading on the screen. If the meter is an older style, it will show a flashing light on the bottom of the meter. Check the control switch mounted above the meter. There should be an illuminated LED light, either red, green or yellow. It may be flashing instead of steady – that is ok. If there are lights and a reading, then everything is done correctly and is ready to go for the winter.

  1. If you are unsure if your Energy-Saving meter is on, you can check your MyMeter account to ensure you are receiving a reading. You can also call WH at (763) 477-3000 and ask to speak to an Energy Use Consultant.

You’re ready to go! As long as you take these steps before heading for warmer weather, your home and meter will be ready for the winter months – all while you’re soaking up the sun.
