Winter will be here before we know it, and now is the time to think about lowering your heating bills, especially if you use propane. The easiest way to lower your heating bills is by investing in an Off-Peak electric heating system.

First, let’s look at the current cost of propane. Some of you may recall paying extremely high propane prices last winter -as high as $4 to $5 per gallon. This means you were paying nearly 3.5 times more to heat your home with propane, than you would have paid if you were using an Off-Peak electric heating system. The Off-Peak electric rate for Wright-Hennepin's (WH) Dual Fuel electric heating program is 4.9 cents per kWh. Based on a furnace that is 95 percent efficient, heating with Off-Peak electricity is equal to paying $1.25 per gallon for propane. Said another way, if you are paying more than $1.25 a gallon for propane, you could potentially save money with electric heating options and dual fuel.

It doesn’t matter how old your propane furnace is. Now is the time to act and take advantage of lowering your heating bills with WH’s Off-Peak Dual Fuel program. One option is to have a HVAC contractor install an electric plenum heater into your existing furnace that allows it to run your furnace using either electricity or propane. This will qualify you for the Off-Peak Dual Fuel program. Not only will you have a new heating source in electric heat, but you will also extend the life of your furnace.
