Starting in January, WH lineworkers will begin inspecting pad-mount transformers in St. Michael, Otsego, Rogers, Corcoran and Medina. Lineworkers will access and open pad-mounted devices such as transformers, switches, fuse cabinets and transition cabinets. These devices are a major part of the system that brings electricity to your home or business.

The inspection process helps prevent and minimize outages. Lineworkers look for many different things during these inspections to ensure safety and reliability of the power grid, such as rust, corrosion or damage to the pad.

They also look for potential issues with access to the device such as blocking trees or bushes. Any issue gaining access to the device may cause a problem with accessibility and safety when working on energized devices. To prevent this, the stickers on the devices read “Maintain 10 ft. clearance on the front and 3 ft. on all other sides.” This creates a safe area for the lineworkers to work on that device.

Finally, the lineworkers check the size and age of the cable in the devices. This is used for updating the mapping system and to plan future cable replacement projects that improve reliability.

During these inspections, you do not need to be present and do not need to do anything before, during or after the inspection. These inspections normally take two lineworkers around 10 minutes to perform. If you have any questions, call (763) 477-3000.
