The Cooperative Advantage

At Wright-Hennepin, we do things a little differently. We're not like traditional, investor-owned utilities that focus on making profits for distant shareholders. Instead, we're here to serve you, our local members, and the communities we all share.

That's because you're not just a customer – you're a member! As a member-owned cooperative, our focus is always on providing safe, reliable, and affordable electricity while investing in the local community we call home. Every decision we make is guided by your best interests, not by corporate profits.

The 7 Cooperative Principles

Electric cooperatives like Wright-Hennepin are built on a set of core principles that guide everything we do. These principles ensure we always put our members and communities first.

open membership

1. Voluntary & Open Membership

We're open to all who can use our services, without discrimination.

democratic control

2. Democratic Member Control

You have a say! Members elect the board and help make decisions.

economic participation

3. Members' Economic Participation

Members contribute to the co-op's capital and receive a fair return.

As a member of Wright-Hennepin, your voice matters. Our cooperative is governed by a Board of Directors elected by you, our fellow members, from districts within our service area. These leaders live and work in the communities we serve, understand local needs, and are guided by our bylaws to ensure decisions are made transparently, fairly, and in the best interest of the membership.

It’s truly local control in action, ensuring our cooperative remains responsive and accountable to you.

Not-for-Profit, For You

Since we’re not-for-profit, any money left over after paying our operating costs is called margins. Instead of distributing these to stockholders, we allocate them back to you, our members, in the form of capital credits. These credits represent your ownership in the cooperative. When our financial condition allows, we return these capital credits to you. It's just one more way your membership truly benefits you.

Commitment to Community

Our commitment extends beyond just keeping your lights on. We believe in actively investing in the vitality and well-being of the communities we serve. From educational initiatives to local grants, we're proud to support the places we call home.
