Capital Credits

As a member of a cooperative, you're not just a customer—you're an owner. Capital credits represent your share of the cooperative's margins, which are the revenues remaining after all expenses are paid. We use these funds for a time to maintain and improve our electric system, which helps us keep our rates competitive. Capital credits are a unique benefit of the cooperative business model, and they are eventually returned to you.

Capital Credit Retirement

Each year, Wright-Hennepin’s Board of Directors evaluates the cooperative’s financial health and determines how much will be returned to members through capital credit retirements. These refunds are typically issued each December, based on the amount of electricity you purchased during the years being retired.

Members with refunds of $10 or more receive a check in the mail, while refunds of $9.99 or less are automatically applied as a credit to your electric bill. If you’d prefer to have your capital credit refund applied directly to your bill, no matter the amount, you can easily request that option below.

Request Bill Credit Refund

Since WH returned capital credit refunds for the first time in 1957, we've returned more than $90 million to our members. WH members have received capital credits for 44 consecutive years!

Unclaimed Capital Credits

Each year, funds that were not claimed or returned by the Post Office are sent back to the Cooperative. We need your help locating the members that these unclaimed Capital Credits belong to. Any information you can provide regarding the location of these members is greatly appreciated.
