Dual Fuel Heating Program
The Dual Fuel Heating Program helps you save money on heating costs by combining electric and backup fuel systems. Your home uses electric heat as its primary source and automatically switches to a non-electric backup (such as propane or natural gas) during peak energy demand. This smart approach conserves energy during high-demand periods while keeping your home comfortable all winter long.
Benefits & Rebates
- Reduced electric rate of $0.06434 per kWh for space heating
- Rebate up to $800 for qualifying systems
- Eligible homes may qualify for sales tax exemption on electricity
Commercial and industrial members interested in Dual Fuel should contact a WH Commercial Account Representative for applicable rate and rebate information.
What is Dual Fuel Heating?
A dual fuel system uses electric heat as your primary source and switches to a non-electric backup during peak energy demand. Wright-Hennepin manages these peak periods with a load control system that temporarily shuts off the electric heating. Control typically occurs on the coldest days and may last up to 12 hours at a time, with a maximum of 400 hours per heating season. During this time, your backup heating source maintains comfort.
Requirements
- Dual fuel system with both electric and thermostatically controlled automatic back-up heat source
- Separate Energy-Saving Program (ESP) meter and receiver equipment must be installed outside the home
- Backup system must adequately heat home during control periods (up to 12 hours)
- Minimum 4.5 kW electric heating load required
How to Enroll
Contact Wright-Hennepin at (763) 477-3000 to confirm eligibility, then work with a contractor to install qualifying equipment. After completing a state electrical inspection and submitting rebate paperwork, we'll finish the setup and activate your program benefits.
