Safety Powers Everything!
WH is proud to serve farmers across our service territory! Stay safe in the fields this summer with these tips:
- Start your day with a safety meeting. Look around ahead of time to be aware of any overhead lines, guy wires, transformers, poles, or other obstructions.
- Equipment coming into contact with a power line is extremely dangerous. Always keep equipment, antennas, and people at least 15 feet away from power lines.
- Be sure all outdoor electrical outlets and equipment are safe to use outdoors, to prevent water damage and potential electric shocks. Hardware stores sell outlets and extension cords for use outdoors.
- Equipment that can be extended, like a grain elevator or augur, or trucks with raised beds, should always be at the lowest height when being moved to prevent contact with overhead lines.
- Always use a spotter when operating machinery near power lines.
- Never try to move a power line out of the way for clearance. If a power line is sagging or low, contact WH.
What to do if your equipment comes in contact with a power line:
- Call 911 and WH right away.
- Keep others clear of the area, and stay in the cab or vehicle unless it starts on fire.
- If a fire starts, cross your arms over your chest and jump clear of the vehicle. Ensure no part of you touches both the equipment and the ground at the same time. Land with your feet together and shuffle or hop at least 40 feet away.
