Tree Trimming Policies

Wright-Hennepin (WH) is committed to providing safe, reliable electric service to our members. A key part of that commitment is maintaining our power line rights-of-way through regular tree clearing and vegetation management.

Trees that grow too close to power lines pose serious safety hazards and are one of the leading causes of power outages, especially during storms. WH proactively clears and sprays trees and brush to reduce these risks, prevent unplanned outages, and support faster restoration times.

Why We Clear Trees

WH trims or removes trees and vegetation near power lines to:

  • Prevent outages caused by falling branches, overgrown trees, or storm damage
  • Ensure the safety of our crews and the public
  • Protect equipment from interference or damage
  • Allow safe and reliable access to overhead and underground lines for maintenance and repairs

How We Do It

WH works year-round with professional crews and certified contractors to carry out this work safely and efficiently. We follow industry best practices, and our program is guided by our official Tree Clearing and Spraying Policy (CORP-90).

Our process includes:

  • Scheduled clearing based on location and growth patterns
  • Advanced notice to landowners when possible
  • Use of mechanical equipment, hand tools, and herbicides where appropriate
  • Annual inspections of system-wide vegetation needs

Herbicides Use

WH may use herbicides to control fast-growing brush and minimize future trimming needs. We use only state-approved products applied by licensed professionals in accordance with safety regulations. Herbicide application helps preserve the integrity of the system while reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Members who wish to opt out of herbicide treatment on their property must complete a Herbicide Opt-Out Agreement with WH. This agreement outlines the member’s responsibility to maintain vegetation on their property at their own expense to WH’s specifications.

Member Responsibilities

We encourage members to:

  • Avoid planting trees or shrubs near overhead or underground utility lines
  • Keep WH informed of any hazardous trees or changing conditions
  • Maintain clear access to meters, transformers, and service lines on your property

To ensure the safety of our system and crews, WH reserves the right to remove or trim vegetation within our easements, rights-of-way, or near utility infrastructure.
